Four days after the explosion which occurred in Ondo State, the driver of the truck that conveyed the explosives, Mr Isiaka Yinusa, said he did not know that his vehicle carried explosive devices. The explosion occurred on Akure-Owo Expressway, at Ilu Abo town in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State in the early hour of Saturday, injuring several people and destroying no fewer than 70 buildings in the community. Yinusa, together with some other people were injured in the accident and were rushed to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure, the state capital, where he had since been receiving treatment. The German Mission in Nigeria has pledged €5.5m to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, says the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Nigeria, The PUNCH reports. The donation, according to an online currency converter, Oanda, as of 2pm on Thursday, exchanged for N2.2bn. This is coming as the West-African country grapples with the attendant effects of economic shocks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic which has paralysed most activities in the country while infecting over 170 people with two deaths. This was made known by the special assistant to the Kano State governor on new media, Salihu Tanko Yakasai (@Dawisu). A spokesman for the Nigerian Government Femi Adesina has said President Muhammadu Buhari and vice president Yemi Osinbajo have been earning only 50% of their salaries since they were sworn in for their first term in office in 2015. Osun state government has given details of how the cases of the coronavirus pandemic suddenly surges to 14, making the state the third highest state with confirmed cases of the deadly disease. AMILOADED reports that the National Centre for Disease Control yesterday announced that Osun recorded 9 new cases of Coronavirus, which raised the total number of confirmed cases to 14. Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan disclosed that the new cases are among returnees from Ivory Coast, who came into the State last week. According to them, the returnees are from Osun, Anambra, Kwara, Oyo, Ekiti, Edo and other States but whose destination was Osun. Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos state on Tuesday, March 24, issued a sit-at-home order across the state to enable the government tackle further spread of coronavirus. A week later, President Muhammadu Buhari in a nationwide broadcast, ordered a lockdown across Lagos, Abuja and Ogun states as part of measures to curb the disease. As part of plans to effectively lock down the Lagos metropolis, the police have blocked the inbound and outbound sections of the Lagos-Ibadan express way. This move follows the recent order by President Muhammadu Buhari, in line with local and global best practices for curbing the spread of COVID-19. In his nationwide broadcast on Sunday, President Buhari ordered that a total lock down be observed in two states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in a bid to combat the virus. The President said directed the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. Retail shops located on streets are free to open up for business as long as they respect the social distancing and crowd control directives, the Lagos State Police Command said on Sunday. The police gave this clarification following reports of partial compliance by petty traders whose businesses are not located in open markets. Spokesman Bala Elkana stated that such persons, even if they do not sell essential and life saving items, were excluded from the shutdown. Citing an example, Elkana said a hairdressing saloon located in a street was free to open as long as it does not accommodate more than 25 people at a go and also strictly prevented body contacts among people.
